In this article we will see how to fix Your device is missing important security and quality fixes error in Windows 10 and Windows 11 or Your device is missing important updates is equivalent error in window 10 or 11.
So let’s get started. I am on the desktop and as you can see that taskbar notification area, I have an icon which mentions your device is missing important updates. Select this icon for details and if I click on this it takes me to the Windows Update page inside Settings app and here you can see that your device is missing important security and quality fixes error is being shown there.
how to fix this? Basically this error occurs when you do not update your system regularly. And to fix this error the easiest solution is to download the latest Windows updates available to you. So here you can see that updates are ready to download.
I have to simply click on the download button and the updates will be downloaded and installed. Once these latest updates are downloaded and installed, this error will be automatically resolved in case if you have already downloaded latest updates. Still you are facing this problem.
Run Windows Update troubleshooter
under Update and Security section of Settings, go to Troubleshoot. Click Additional Troubleshooters, locate the Windows Update troubleshooter under Additional Troubleshooters and click on it. Then Select Run the Troubleshooter.
This troubleshooter is so designed that it can automatically detect and fix Windows Update problems, so in many cases this troubleshooter can help you to fix this issue entirely. However, in some cases it may report troubleshooting couldn’t identify the problem and in that case you need to continue your troubleshooting with other solutions.

Using Command Prompt
So our next solution is to reset update components and for this we have to run the commands shown in this text file.
Commands to reset update components:
net stop wuauserv net stop cryptSvc net stop bits net stop msiserver Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old net start wuauserv net start cryptSvc net start bits net start msiserver
Copy These Commonds and paste directly to the Command Prompt window. So we will open the Command Prompt as administrator. In the Command Prompt window we will type these commands one by one. So here our first command is net stop wuauserv and press the Enter key. This will stop the Windows Update service Next command is net stop cryptSvc and this is to stop cryptographic services. Our third command is to stop bits and that is net stop bits. So the Background Intelligent Transfer service has been stopped.
Now moving on, our next command is to stop Windows Installer service. After stopping these services, we will copy the command for renaming software distribution folder and then press the Enter key after typing the command. As you can see that the software distribution folder has been renamed as the command successfully executed. Next we will rename catroot2 folder and after that we will start the Background services we stopped earlier in this Command Prompt window so we will first start Windows Update service, then we will start Cryptographic Services. After this we will start Background Intelligent Transfer Service and finally we start Windows Installer Service.
After executing these commands successfully you can restart your system and then check for updates and try updating it and once you install the latest updates this error will no longer appear and will be resolved completely. If solution one and two did not solve your problem you can try this last solution which is helpful in most of the cases.
Update to latest version
Right click on the Start button and select run type winver and in the About Windows check the version you have installed. So as you can see that here I have installed version 21H1 but today the date is for January 2022. This means the latest version is now version 21H2 so in this case the version 21H1 is no longer the latest version.
So to resolve this problem you have to upgrade to the latest version. So open your favorite browser and search for Windows 10 ISO in case if you are on Windows 11 search for Windows 11 ISO and select the respective search result for the official software download page by Microsoft. So in this case I am on the system which have Windows 10 installed and here I will scroll down and locate the latest version information and here I have an Update now button.
Click on that and it will download the Windows Update Assistant on the system. Once it is downloaded you can open it. You can also create a Windows 10 installation media but that is for the clean install. So continue with the Windows 10 Update Assistant. When we open Windows 10 Update Assistant we can see that here we have the heading Mentions update to the latest version of Windows 10 and it also mentioned further, this PC is currently not running the latest and most secure version of Windows Ten. This PC is running version 21H1 and the latest version is 21H2.
So in this case you can simply click on the Update Now button and install the latest version of Windows 10 or Windows 11 whatever you have and once the latest version of Windows 10 or Windows 11 is installed this error will go automatically and you can continue installing latest updates as they are available.
